  22.     Just to warn all of you, there have been a lot of new
  23. subscribers in the past few days, and I'm expecting MANY more, as
  24. people receive GUSes and modems for whatever holidays they celebrate
  25. and discover the net.

  27.     Not only will this list be noisy for a while as newbies figure
  28. out how to use mailers, what a FAQ is, etc., but the net will be.  For
  29. those of you new to the net, this flood happens all through September
  30. as people start school, and again in January.

  48. Regarding the question on caching patches other than the
  49. GM set: Windows only "knows" the patches named in the
  50. INI file.  For a custom patch without bank switching,
  51. you have to replace one of the GM patches with the
  52. custom patch.  The version of IWANNAC on EPAS does just
  53. that.  You have to start Windows with the custom INI
  54. file to use it properly.
  55.  
  56. The new Windows drivers support bank switching.  This 
  57. would allow you to have the GM patch set as Bank0 and
  58. custom patches as Bank1.  The documentation shows how
  59. to set up the INI file to support bank switching.
  60. Unfortunately, it says absolutely NOTHING about how to
  61. switch to a new bank.

  63. I strongly suspect that bank switching on the GUS will
  64. NOT behave as it does on ROM-based synths.  Those are
  65. literally bank switched, so that any active patches
  66. change when you change the active bank.  With patch
  67. caching, it would be both impractical and stupid to
  68. clear all of the on-board RAM when you switch a bank.
  69. In this case, the GUS would have a strong advantage over
  70. Roland GS devices in that you could load up several
  71. patches from Bank 0, and leave them in RAM while you
  72. switch to Bank 1 to load others.

  82. I uploaded this utility (patcher.zip) to the Gravis board. I don't
  83. currently have ftp access so I can't get it up to epas yet. This runs under
  84. windows and allows you to easily re-assign the midi->patch setup in the
  85. ultrasnd.ini file. I'm working on the next version that will work with patch
  86. banks. I need input though, so please respond with what you think of it and
  87. any suggestions for further versions.
